Why can I only eat beige food?

Updated: Aug 21, 2018

I’m Amelia, I’m 28 and I live with my boyfriend of 10 years, Charlie. We met at school when we were 17 and, after gap years, university and lots of travelling, we moved in together and bought our first house in 2016. Neither of us is particularly fussed by the idea of marriage, so we have decided to start a family before we say ‘I do’.

This is my first pregnancy and I am currently 13 weeks (due at the end of February 2018) - the apps inform me that this means baby is somewhere between the size of a lime and a lemon! We are not going to find out whether we are having a boy or a girl because we love the idea of having a surprise. I also hope that the anticipation of finally finding out might make labour that tiny bit more manageable!

I have had quite bad nausea from around 6 or 7 weeks which is finally, but slowly, starting to subside. Before becoming pregnant, I was a bit of a foodie and I absolutely loved eating. Sadly, this has not been the case for the past six weeks and I have survived on the most beige of foods to get me through. I also used to be an exercise fiend - going to classes at least three or four times a week, but I have not been able to keep this up due to extreme tiredness and, unexpectedly, just a general drop in my ability to endure exercise, which seemed to happen overnight. I never knew pregnancy could have this effect!

It has been hard to carry on as normal at work when feeling so rubbish - I am a solicitor and sometimes the days can be long and demanding. Some days it has felt as though I'm wading through treacle, both physically and mentally - but I have been doing my very best to keep going as normal and I have managed to go so far without any sick days, which is a minor miracle!

I am told that my appetite and energy will start to reappear during the second trimester and I can't wait to feel more like myself again. As the nausea is starting to subside, I am in the strange limbo period where I don't feel as pregnant as before and I still don't look pregnant, so I am also really excited to start seeing my bump grow over the coming weeks!
